Keep Britain Tidy estimates that two million pieces of rubbish are dropped every day across the country, which equates to 23 items of rubbish being dropped every second.
The RSPCA receive around 5,000 calls a year regarding litter and unfortunately, our wildlife are the main victims when it comes to people’s rubbish – particularly wild birds.
The average person holds a piece of litter for 12 steps before dropping it. So if they don’t find a litter bin within about thirty feet, chances are it lands on the street.
The result is that last year across England, 30 million tonnes was swept up – enough to fill Wembley Stadium four times over – at a cost of nearly £850 million.
The event was co-ordinated by Tower Hamlets Lead for Air Quality, tacking Climate Emergency, Councillor Asma Islam. She said, We have a long way to go but it’s refreshing that people are making a stand.
Also in attendance at the clean up was Councillor Shad Chowdhury and community volunteer Emdad Rahman.
