Deaf football showcase breaks down barriers

Shadwell Youth Organisation and deaf charity Al-Isharah Football organised an inclusive football show pitting players from the deaf and non deaf community to raise awareness and break down barriers.

An extraordinary football tournament at Mile End Leisure Centre was the first of it’s kind in the area and resulted in some excellent performances from each team.

Despite the added advantage non deaf players held it was the deaf and mute footballers from East London Deaf FC who stole the show with stunning displays to lift the first Deaf Cup.

The dramatic final, which was refereed by Aftar Ali from Shdwell FC, saw East London FC come from 2-0 down to win a pulsating final 3-2 with the final kick of the ball.

Towsif Jahan from Shadwell FC, a tournament co-ordinator on the day commented, “The football today has been phenomenal and it’s been a fantastic day out with friendly banter and tremendous sportsmanship all round. It’s just been a great advert for how the magic of football helps and heals communities.”

Ruhul Amin from Al Isharah added, “This goes to show what we can achieve collectively. The love and vigour for the game was amazing to see and these players are really talented. Hats off to everyone for making this possible. We will be back with another one soon.”
