Saturday night is soup kitchen night and the teams at One Third Soup Kitchen operate at two locals to serve homeless friends.
Tonight massive thanks go out to my fellow Scintilla Cricket Club board member Hamid of Study Buddies Tuition Centre and his family for the lovely food along with the Ummah Welfare Trust for the amazing array of snacks.
We had no regulars tonight, everyone was new. A gentleman called Jim shook my hand and told me he’d been asking for help in his head all day. He was really pleased to take home a bag of cakes, biscuits, crisps and snacks. I didn’t know what to say and just thanked him for allowing us to serve him.
Not much else I could say really.
A lady named Beverley said she wasn’t homeless but might as well be after losing her job. She’s been really struggling to afford nutritious meals. We were serving a few guests and couldn’t feel sorry for her. I was glad of that – Just smile, serve, move on because if you ponder too much it affects yourself.
The homeless and needy at Stratford are diverse. Faces come and go. Some like my old friend Paul die too early. It’s a total scandal. Meanwhile Newham council is far busier penalising motorists for barely visible box junction offences. It’s sickening how efficient the pen pushers can be with their priorities.
Even though it was a quiet night in terms of human traffic flow the whole deck was cleared tonight.
If anyone local would like to donate hot food please get in touch!
