Cricketer Qam Farooq has been appointed Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Chairman.
The appointment of the Kashmiri Pakistani born all rounder was confirmed last week and Farooq becomes the first Asian in the clubs 156 years history to be appointed to the prestigious role at the traditional landmark cricket outfit.
In fact 43 year old Farooq who also plays for the first XI at Sawbridgeworth becomes the first ethnic minority candidate to be appointed an official role and is testament to the progressive outlook at Sawbridgeworth in a bid to reflect cricket in the community.
Farooq, who is a senior representative and head of operations at Ganador Sports is a well known face on the cricketing circuit and was part of the historic UK multi-faith touring team supported by Essex CC which visited the Vatican in Rome to play two game against St Peter’s CC – Pope Francis’ team and the local Roma Capanelle CC.
Speaking after his appointment a delighted Farooq commented, “I am humbled and looking forward to serving my time in this role. I am going to need lots of support and guidance and am not too proud to ask, especially as I have friends who have a wealth of knowledge.
“I really hope that my appointment will bring our communities together.”
