The Leftley Sports Club of Barking & Dagenham has been recognised for its grassroots community efforts and awarded an Excel Award for 2018 in recognition of inspiring local people to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Members of the community club were guests at a special award evening which took place at Care House in Whitechapel.
Speaking after receiving the award LSC Chairman Muhammed Ali said, “We thank the Award organisers for this recognition. We are truly humbled to be in the same room as some outstanding nominations. Our vision has always been to use a fun and inclusive approach to promote physical and mental health well being through sports related activities.”
Excel Awards Chairman Shabbir Kawsar added, “The Leftley Sports Club is a prime example of a passion driven grass roots project. The members are inclusive and everyone is welcome to attend activities which promote good health. We hope that the standards set by LSC will inspire local people to adopt a healthier outlook. Well done to all involved.”
The weekly activity sessions at LSC are for everyone – beginners, joggers, veterans – and there is no minimum standard or level of experience required.
LSC member Zoinul Abidin concluded, “It’s fine for participants to walk a bit, jog a bit, and chat along the way. Making things fun engages our members and really helps to get the community active again.”
In addition to the Saturday activities a “Dads & Lads” football session takes place on Sunday mornings at 10:30 am and canoeing on the lake during the summer.
There are also separate sessions for women who wish to take apart in female only activities.
All cycling and running sessions are completely free of charge. There is no prior booking or application: just turn up and enjoy. The meeting point for each activity is 10.30am at the Mayesbrook Park gates on The Drive.
